Our Health Tip:

For high uric acid levels:

Eat lots of fruit because it contains a lot of potassium, which helps dissolve the uric acid. Especially recommended are black currents (2 glasses of juice a day) and cranberries, but also strawberries, raspberries, cherries (during cherry season, have a fruit day once a week), as well as dried plums.

Several interesting studies were recently published confirming the correlation between psyche and illness. We briefly present several of them here:

“Psycho-social stress leads to inflamation”

In the latest issue of the professional magazine “Archives of Internal Medicine,” the results of a study involving 6,800 men and women were published. This study examined the correlation between psychological traits and the inflammation markers fibrinogen, CRP (C-reactive protein) and interleukin 6. The results showed that cynicism caused the inflammation markers in the blood to increase the most; chronic stress was associated with the increase of two inflammation markers and depression led to an increase of interleukin 6.

Our commentary:

These results are very significant because inflammatory processes play an important role in nearly all the illnesses associated with modern civilization, such as coronary and circulatory diseases, diabetes, rheumatism, arthritis, etc.
It is also interesting that cynicism causes the strongest inflammatory reaction in the body. Is this perhaps connected with the nature of a cynic? A cynic often does not agree with certain things; he rebels inwardly against them and he adjusts externally. However, he does little or nothing to changes these circumstances – or his attitude toward them. Cynicism demonstrates bitterness and defeat in the struggle against “unfavorable circumstances in life.” This is a permanent fight, which ultimately leads to aggression against one’s surroundings and fellow men. And aggression is inflammation, which in the end can lead to all the illnesses listed above. Thus the cause of these illnesses can be, at least to a large extent, the result of this attitude toward life. Better than cynicism would be the willingness to learn from our circumstances in life, and to develop and to give ourselves what we expect from our surroundings.

A basic positive emotional attitude hinders infection

The results of a study at the University of Pittsburgh were published in the December issue of “Psychosomatic Medicine.” In this study, researchers carefully recorded the moods of 193 test persons. They were then infected with cold viruses and quarantined. People with positive attitudes reported far less symptoms than those classified as bad-tempered and disgruntled. The researchers concluded from this that a positive emotional basic attitude plays a greater role than previously assumed.

Our Commentary:

This study ideally complements the first study cited. A “strong immune system” is closely linked to a positive basic attitude. Ultimately, the best treatment for a weak immune system is to analyze our negative and aggressive aspects and to get rid of them. This always includes reconciling with our fellow man and with nature.

Example of an actual case:

A 39-year old female patient arrived in a state of total exhaustion, complaining about sleeplessness, inner turbulence, disquiet, anxiety and panic attacks, weak circulation, twitching muscles. At the time, she couldn’t get along with herself, her husband or children.
After an extensive physical examination, ascertainment of her psychological state, tests for micronutrient levels and a naturopathic diagnosis, the patient was treated on an ambulatory basis. Parallel to relaxation treatments, including meridian massage and lymph drainage, she received orthomolecular infusions, naturopathic medicines for her nerves and treatments to eliminate toxins via EDS. She started to actively participate in psychotherapeutic conversations. Food intolerances were determined and she began to gradually change her diet.
Within a month, the sleeplessness and inner agitation abated. Beginning with the second month, she felt stronger again. During the course of continued physical recuperation, she was increasingly able to recognize conflicts in her life and work on getting rid of them step by step. She has now been content and free of symptoms for a year.
